American CEOs, forced into politics by cultural trends and staff demands in recent years, are hitting a new phase — actual lawmakers and rule-shapers.

Why it matters: Every CEO has been hit by the radical transformation of what the country demands of its corporations. And with each controversy comes CEOS scrambling, sometimes clumsily, to handle a power many would rather not have.

It's not just Georgia: Corporate America is under growing pressure to put its muscle behind voting rights around the country, Axios' Courtenay Brown and Sara Fischer write.

  • Texas is shaping up to be the next big battleground: American Airlines, based in Fort Worth, said in a statement it is "strongly opposed" to a state bill with "provisions that limit voting rights." Dell CEO Michael Dell tweeted against another voting bill.

Between the lines: Employees and customers are increasingly looking to corporations to take on a bigger role in social and political issues. Many of them have leaned into that role — and gotten results.

  • Big companies, entertainers and ultimately the NBA and NCAA canceled big-ticket events in North Carolina after the state passed its anti-LGBTQ "bathroom bill" in 2016. The state lost roughly $3.8 billion in business and ended up repealing that measure less than a year later.
  • The MLB yanked the All-Star Game from Atlanta.

MLB relocating All-Star game will cost Georgia $100M, tourism official says

The "estimated lost economic impact" of Major League Baseball's decision to move its All-Star Game out of Georgia over the state's voting restrictions is more than $100 million, a tourism industry official told CNN Saturday.

What they're saying: Cobb Travel and Tourism chief Holly Quinlan told a news conference Friday that the game "would have been a big boost to Cobb businesses and help with recovery efforts after the COVID-19 pandemic."

Trump calls for boycott of more companies over Georgia voting law

Former President Trump on Saturday added to a list of organizations he's calling on supporters to boycott for opposing Georgia's voting restrictions.

Driving the news: Trump on Friday urged a boycott of "woke companies" that have taken a stand and Major League Baseball for moving its All-Star Game out of Georgia, adding: "Are you listening Coke, Delta." In his new statement, he said: "Boycott Major League Baseball, Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, JPMorgan Chase, ViacomCBS, Citigroup, Cisco, UPS, and Merck."

FAA clears more planes after 5G fears

The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday it had approved nearly 80% of the U.S. commercial fleet to perform low-visibility landings at airports with new 5G services after fears of signal interference limited 5G rollout.

Why it matters: The FAA approvals will help provide more certainty after the agency raised fears that 5G signals could reduce the accuracy of certain equipment, known as radio altimeters, that helps planes land and take off in inclement weather.
