New body camera footage obtained by CNN shows the moment a DC police officer was brutally attacked by Trump supporters during the Capitol Hill insurrection.

Driving the news: The release of video comes a day after Republican members of Congress sought to downplay the Jan. 6 events, with some lawmakers calling the rioters "peaceful patriots" and comparing them to tourists.

The big picture: The body camera footage comes from DC Metropolitan police officer Michael Fanone. It shows him being swarmed, beaten and tased by pro-Trump rioters.

  • Fanone told CNN he was knocked unconscious at some point, and that he suffered a mild heart attack and concussion during the attack.
  • Fanone can be heard in the video screaming as one rioter yells, "I got one!" It is not immediately clear what happens next, but another rioter seems to intervene and a voice is heard saying, "Don't hurt him."
  • Fanone himself also pleads with the rioters not to hurt him, saying, "I have kids." He is later taken to safety inside a Capitol tunnel, where other police officers comfort him and call for medical attention.

Between the lines: Fanone said in an interview with CNN last month that he is dealing with a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder from the events of that day.

  • The officer called out elected officials who he says "downplay" what happened on Jan. 6, saying that he "experienced the most brutal, savage hand-to-hand combat of my entire life — let alone my policing career."

Two Seattle cops fired for being present at Jan. 6 insurrection

Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz announced Friday that two police officers were terminated for being present and "directly next" to the Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection.

State of play: The officers, Caitlin and Alexander Everett, who are married, said they were standing 30 to 50 yards away from the Capitol and never saw any sign of disturbance. However, FBI photographs showed them standing "directly next" to the Capitol building.

Health care workers hit new breaking point

The ranks of health care workers are dwindling and stretching what it means to be reaching their "breaking points," particularly at small nonprofit hospitals.

The big picture: Even as Omicron cases have begun to wane in some places, many hospitals are still fielding a crush of patients amid record employee callouts.

Sarah Palin tests positive for COVID, delaying defamation trial

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, delaying the start of her defamation trial against the New York Times.

Why it matters: The trial will be closely watched, as it's a rare instance of a major media company defending its editorial practices before an American jury.
