New body camera footage obtained by CNN shows the moment a DC police officer was brutally attacked by Trump supporters during the Capitol Hill insurrection.

Driving the news: The release of video comes a day after Republican members of Congress sought to downplay the Jan. 6 events, with some lawmakers calling the rioters "peaceful patriots" and comparing them to tourists.

The big picture: The body camera footage comes from DC Metropolitan police officer Michael Fanone. It shows him being swarmed, beaten and tased by pro-Trump rioters.

  • Fanone told CNN he was knocked unconscious at some point, and that he suffered a mild heart attack and concussion during the attack.
  • Fanone can be heard in the video screaming as one rioter yells, "I got one!" It is not immediately clear what happens next, but another rioter seems to intervene and a voice is heard saying, "Don't hurt him."
  • Fanone himself also pleads with the rioters not to hurt him, saying, "I have kids." He is later taken to safety inside a Capitol tunnel, where other police officers comfort him and call for medical attention.

Between the lines: Fanone said in an interview with CNN last month that he is dealing with a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder from the events of that day.

  • The officer called out elected officials who he says "downplay" what happened on Jan. 6, saying that he "experienced the most brutal, savage hand-to-hand combat of my entire life — let alone my policing career."

Republican members of Congress sought to minimize the Capitol insurrection at a House hearing on Wednesday, with statements calling pro-Trump rioters "patriots" and other lawmakers falsely denying demonstrators were supporters of the former president at all.

Driving the news: The hearing comes shortly after House Republicans voted to oust Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) from leadership over her criticism of former President Trump's actions leading up to and on Jan. 6.

Pacific Northwest soon to be ground zero for record-shattering heat

Computer model projection showing the unusually strong heat dome over the Pacific Northwest on Sunday. (PivotalWeather).

A heat wave is bringing unprecedented high temperatures to the Pacific Northwest — a region of the country typically cooled by the ocean, rather than central air conditioning. The heat will begin Friday and last into early next week.

Why it matters: The heat wave will shatter monthly and all-time temperature records in the Pacific Northwest. Some of the records could break the old milestones by several degrees.

The crypto kings

Bitcoin is largely a wash for 2021, but that isn't dimming crypto optimism among venture capitalists or their deep-pocketed limited partners.

Driving the news: Andreessen Horowitz this morning announced that it's raised $2.2 billion for its third crypto-focused fund.
