Evan Neumann, an alleged participant in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, has fled the country and is seeking asylum in Belarus, the Washington Post reports.

Driving the news: Neumann, who is wanted in the United States on six charges related to the insurrection attempt, including counts of violent entry and disorderly conduct, appears to have sat down for an interview with Belarusian state television to discuss his departure.

  • Neumann, 48, of Mill Valley, Calif., told the country's state-controlled media that his lawyer had recommended he flee to Europe, adding that the charges against him were "unfounded," according to Buzzfeed.
  • In a segment titled “Goodbye, America!,” the Belarusian news channel characterized Neumann as a "simple American whose shops were burned by Black Lives Matter activists," per the Post.
  • A preview of the interview was aired Monday and the full interview will broadcast Wednesday, per the Post.

The big picture: Belarus does not have an extradition treaty with the United States, Buzzfeed noted. The Belarusian border guard detained Neumann in August. It is not yet clear if he will be returned to the U.S.

  • Before Neumann fled, prosecutors asked a judge to unseal the case, saying the government has reason to believe that he "is already aware he is being investigated... and is actively attempting to evade arrest."
  • Neumann managed to evade authorities by flying to Europe “under the guise of a business trip,” per Buzzfeed.

BuzzFeed News union members plan walkout for same day as SPAC IPO vote

Photo: Drew Angerer/Getty Images

Members of BuzzFeed News' union said they plan to walk out on the job at noon Thursday, the same day shareholders will vote on whether or not to take BuzzFeed public via a SPAC IPO.

Why it matters: Digital media companies are anxiously eyeing BuzzFeed's expected public debut to see whether the market responds positively to a digital media firm trading publicly. Pressure from its news union could complicate that process.

BuzzFeed News employees vote to unionize after mass layoffs

Employees at BuzzFeed News announced Tuesday they have voted to unionize with the NewsGuild of New York, claiming in a statement that they have "legitimate grievances about unfair pay disparities, mismanaged pivots and layoffs, weak benefits, skyrocketing health insurance costs, diversity and more."

Why it matters: This comes weeks after the company laid off more than 220 employees, or roughly 15% of its workforce, including jobs within its news division. It is a huge blow to BuzzFeed's leadership, which has in the past suggested that it could be a better advocate for employees than a union could be.

JPMorgan: "Full global recovery" in 2022

JPMorgan Chase Global Research says in a forecast to clients: "2022 will be the year of a full global recovery, an end of the global pandemic, and a return to normal conditions we had prior to the COVID-19 outbreak."

The big picture: The bullish report sees "a return of global mobility, and a release of pent-up demand from consumers (e.g. travel, services)."
