Coronavirus restriction signs in Monterey Park, California, on June 14. Photo: Frederic Brown/AFP via Getty Images

California lifted most of its coronavirus restrictions on Tuesday, taking the U.S. a step closer to fully reopening.

Why it matters: California, the most populous state in the country, was one of the last states to drop its health restrictions, according to the New York Times.

The big picture: Establishments will no longer limit capacity, and people won't have to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

  • Masks will still be required in places like hospitals, long-term-care facilities, public transportation and prisons, but people who have been vaccinated will, for the most part, no longer have to wear masks.
  • Unvaccinated people are still required to wear masks, but enforcement of that rule will be based on an honor system.

The coronavirus has infected more than 3.8 million people in the state and has killed at least 63,204, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

  • The state has administered more than 40.5 million vaccines.

New York City revives vaccine passports

Illustration: Aïda Amer/Axios

New York City yesterday became the first city in the U.S. to require proof of coronavirus vaccination for indoor dining and other leisure activities, a measure popular among public health experts but previously squashed by political backlash to "vaccine passports."

Why it matters: Employers and now local governments are starting to ensure that remaining unvaccinated will have consequences for everyday life, testing the resolve of those who say nothing could persuade them to get a shot.

The COVID-19 pandemic recently took a serious turn amid the Delta variant's spread, but the Denver area didn't seem to notice.

In grocery stores, bars and shops across the area this weekend, the renewed public health precautions advising the vaccinated to wear masks indoors were met with a mix of acceptance, frustration and indignation, as the Axios Local team reported.

America's pandemic pessimism returns

Data: Harris Poll; Chart: Axios Visuals

A majority of Americans now, once again, say the worst of the pandemic is yet to come, per new Harris polling provided exclusively to Axios.

Why it matters: We took a brief hiatus from worrying about the pandemic, but the Delta variant and the response to it appear to have sent us back to a dark place.
