Police work at the scene in Kongsberg, Norway, on Oct. 13. Photo: Torstein Be/NTB/AFP via Getty Images

Police have arrested a 37-year-old Danish citizen after a man killed five people and injured two others with a bow and arrow in the Norwegian town of Kongsberg on Wednesday.

Why it matters: The attack, southwest of the capital of Oslo, is the deadliest in Norway since 2011, when a far-right extremist went on a shooting rampage and killed 77 people.

The big picture: The suspect, who lives in Kongsberg, was taken into custody and charged soon after the attack and transported to the nearby town of Drammen, according to a police statement. Police did not immediately disclose what he's been charged with.

  • The attacks happened over a large area of the town, according to The Guardian. Several parts of the town have been temporarily cordoned off by police, per the BBC.
  • Norway's national security agency, known as PST, said Thursday that the attack "currently appear to be an act of terrorism," AP reports.
  • Police are also investigating whether other weapons were used, per Reuters.

Of note: Police were temporarily ordered to carry firearms in the wake of the attack, breaking with the norm as Norwegian police are typically unarmed, the New York Times noted.

  • "The police currently have no concrete indications that there is a change in the threat level in the country," the police directorate said in a statement.

What they're saying: "The reports coming from Kongsberg tonight are horrifying," Prime Minister Erna Solberg told a news conference, per Reuters.

  • "I understand that many people are afraid, but it's important to emphasize that the police are now in control," she added.

Chicago police union urges officers to defy vaccine mandate

Chicago's police union is threatening to "file a temporary restraining order" in an attempt to stop the city's COVID-19 vaccination mandate from taking effect, per Fox 32.

The big picture: Under the requirement that's due to take effect on Friday, city of Chicago staff who aren't vaccinated against the coronavirus must be tested semiweekly. They will be placed on unpaid leave if they refuse. Fraternal Order of Police president John Catanzara is urging union members to defy the mandate.

A U.S. Capitol Police officer has been indicted on obstruction of justice charges for allegedly helping hide evidence of a participant's involvement in the Jan. 6 riot.

Driving the news: Officer Michael A. Riley, 50, is accused of telling the unidentified participant, referred to as "Person 1," in the Jan. 6 riot to delete posts from Facebook, which showed them in the Capitol during the attack.

Law enforcement across the country work to mandate LGBTQ awareness training

Police departments across the county are introducing LGBTQ awareness and cultural competency training to repair relationships between the community and law enforcement, NBC News reports.

Why it matters: The relationship has long been strained, and a study published by the Williams Institute in May found LGBTQ people are six times more likely than the general public to be stopped by police.
