Data: Deloitte and the Alliance for Board Diversity; Chart: Will Chase/Axios

Corporate boards are getting less white and male, but companies are "recycling" to achieve the feat — i.e., tapping a limited circle of executives of color to fill open slots.

Why it matters: In some cases, more diversity came "by recycling ... existing Fortune 500 board members rather than bringing in new individuals with different skills, backgrounds, and perspectives," according to a report out Tuesday by Deloitte and the Alliance for Board Diversity.

  • Roughly 36% of board seats held by people of color were occupied by executives on several boards last year. That doesn't account for involvement on boards outside the Fortune 500.
  • Two out of every five Black board members belong to several boards.
  • Hispanic/Latina women serve on roughly 1.3 Fortune 500 boards. Compare that to white men, who serve on an average of 1.1.

Sober stat: No Fortune 500 corporate boards are representative of U.S. demographics.

A group of Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign veterans is launching a strategy firm to help CEOs avoid getting “canceled” and to advise companies how to respond to changing cultural norms before they're faced with a crisis.

Driving the news: C Street Advisory Group, led by CEO Jon Henes, a former national campaign finance chair for Harris’ presidential campaign, will draw on the group's broad political network to help corporate America diversify its workforce.

The chair of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot said Thursday that the panel is soon going to ask Ivanka Trump to cooperate with the investigation.

Driving the news: "You will anticipate the committee inviting some people to come talk to us," Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) told reporters in the Capitol, adding, "not lawmakers right now — Ivanka Trump."

Putin is challenging Ukraine's "right to exist," Blinken says

Secretary of State Tony Blinken put the stakes of a Russian invasion of Ukraine in stark terms on Thursday, saying Vladimir Putin's threat is a direct challenge to Ukraine's "right to exist" as an independent country and a democracy.

What he's saying: “There’s been a lot of speculation about President Putin’s true intentions, but we don’t actually have to guess. He’s told us, repeatedly. He’s laying the groundwork for an invasion because he doesn’t believe Ukraine is a sovereign nation," Blinken said during a speech in Berlin.
