President Biden said Tuesday he has asked Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the administration's push to protect voting rights.

Why it matters: Biden called Republican-led efforts to restrict voting access across the country an "unprecedented assault" on the right to vote. "I'm going to fight like heck" to maintain and expand voting access, the president said before announcing Harris' appointment.

  • Biden made the announcement during his speech commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre.

What they're saying: "Every American has a right to have their voice heard at the ballot box, and no American should be kept from voting early, voting by mail, or voting at all," Harris said in a statement.

  • "Our Administration will not stand by when confronted with any effort that keeps Americans from voting," she added, noting that she will work with voting rights organizations, the private sector and lawmakers to protect voting access.

Civil rights groups filed a slew of lawsuits in Texas on Tuesday, kicking off what is expected to be an extensive legal battle mere hours after Gov. Greg Abbott signed controversial voting restrictions into law.

Why it matters: Critics have denounced the new law as a dangerous voter suppression bill that will disproportionately impact communities of color. The bill drove Texas House Democrats to flee the state in protest, but after enough returned to resume quorum, the legislation went to Abbott's desk.

Harris campaigns for Newsom as recall campaign enters final stretch

Vice President Harris attended a Bay Area campaign event Wednesday in support of California Gov. Gavin Newsom ahead of next week's recall election.

Why it matters: The Tuesday election will be only the second time in California history that a gubernatorial recall campaign has succeeded in getting on the ballot. Newsom, a Democrat, is facing challenges from numerous candidates, including conservative talk radio host Larry Elder.

President Biden and Vice President Harris have their own "Pete Souzas," and they're also working to create a visual archive of the new administration.

Why it matters: Photographers Adam Schultz, Lawrence Jackson and their colleagues have a number of social media sites that give a look at the president and vice president when the news media isn't present.
