President Biden urged for "a full-blown investigation" into whether the officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright on Sunday was acting intentionally or accidentally fired her weapon.

Driving the news: The "very senior officer" who fatally shot the 20-year-old Black man outside Minneapolis appeared to have inadvertently pulled out her gun instead of a taser, Brooklyn Center Chief Tim Gannon said at a Monday press conference.

What he's saying: "I haven't called Daunte Wright's family, but our prayers are with their family. It's really a tragic thing that happened," Biden said, speaking to reporters on Monday.

  • "But I think we've got to wait and see what the investigation shows, the entire investigation. You all watched, I assume, as I did, the film — the body cam — which is fairly graphic."
  • "The question is, was it an accident, was it intentional? That remains to be determined by a full-blown investigation. But in the meantime, I want to make it clear again, there is absolutely no justification for violence. Peaceful protests? Understandable," he said.

Protests erupt after police shoot Black driver near Minneapolis

Police fatally shot Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, during a traffic stop near Minneapolis Sunday, sparking protests and unrest that lasted into the night.

Between the lines: The shooting in the Twin Cities suburb of Brooklyn Center, in Hennepin County, has further heightened tensions between police and the local community as the trial continues of former police officer Derek Chauvin, over the death of George Floyd.

Judge denies Chauvin lawyers' motion to sequester jury after Daunte Wright shooting

The judge presiding over Derek Chauvin's murder trial denied a motion by the defense to sequester and question the jury in the aftermath of the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright near Minneapolis Sunday night.

Why it matters: The defense argued that the police shooting of a Black man just miles away from where George Floyd died could influence the jury and result in prejudicial bias.

Lawmakers reach deal on bipartisan commission to investigate Jan. 6

House negotiators have reached an agreement on the parameters of a 9/11-style commission to investigate the "facts and circumstances" surrounding the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the House Homeland Security Committee announced Friday.

Why it matters: The formation of a bipartisan Jan. 6 commission had been delayed for months, after some Republicans insisted that the scope of the investigation be expanded to include violence by far-left protesters last summer.
