Axios, HBO and DCTV have renewed "Axios on HBO" — a news-oriented, documentary series — for third and four seasons.

  • The 2020 and 2021 seasons will feature 12 half-hour episodes, with the option to add shorter, interview-driven Axios specials, designed to move with the news and drive the conversation in prime time.

Why it matters: Directed and produced by Emmy winners Matthew O’Neill (HBO’s "Baghdad ER") and Perri Peltz (HBO’s "Remembering the Artist Robert De Niro, Sr."), "Axios on HBO” features breaking news and big interviews, including President Trump, GM CEO Mary Barra, Elon Musk and more.

What’s next: “Axios on HBO” Season 2 returns this month on four consecutive Sundays, starting at 6 p.m. ET/PT on Oct. 20 on all HBO platforms.

“The worlds of politics, business, tech and culture are colliding faster and more furiously than ever. Viewers hunger to see — and fully understand — what really matters in this noisy age. This collaboration with HBO and DCTV has allowed us to put a sharp new lens on the people, ideas and trends at the heart of this collision.”
— Axios CEO Jim VandeHei

China wins 1st gold of Tokyo Olympics

Silver medalist Anastasiia Galashina of Russia, gold medalist Yang Qian of China and bronze medalist Nina Christen of Switzerland celebrate on the podium after the 10m air rifle women's final. Photo:

China's Yang Qian won the first gold of the Tokyo Olympics, narrowly beating Anastasiia Galashina of the Russian Olympic Committee in the women's 10-meter air rifle final.

Why it matters: The first medal ceremony of the Games took on extra meaning after a year-long delay and other hurdles brought on by the pandemic. Athletes are required to hang medals around their own necks in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Journalism's two Americas

There's a sharp divide in American journalism between haves and have-nots. While national journalists covering tech and politics on the coasts reap the benefits of booming businesses and book deals, local media organizations, primarily newspapers, continue to shrink.

Why it matters: The disparate fortunes skew what gets covered, elevating big national political stories at the expense of local, community-focused news.
