Apple announced on Friday that it would delay its plan to scan iPhone users' libraries for images of child sex abuse.

Why it matters: The delay is an acknowledgment of the privacy concerns brought up when the program was first announced last month.

Background: Apple announced the program to scan for child sex abuse material imagery on August 5th.

  • The system would use "cryptographic hashes" to detect illegal images, and if enough images were detected for a user it would be turned over to law enforcement per Axios' Scott Rosenberg.
    • Apple said that the error rate would be "one in a one trillion" per a Q&A Apple released earlier this month.

Driving the news: While the decision was applauded by child safety organizations, many online privacy organizations were concerned that this technology could be used in a way that violates a user's privacy, per Axios' Scott Rosenberg.

What they're saying: "Based on feedback from customers, advocacy groups, researchers and others, we have decided to take additional time over the coming months to collect input and make improvements before releasing these critically important child safety features,” Apple said in a statement this morning.

The states with their own child tax credits

Expand chart
Data: NCSL; Map: Kavya Beheraj/Axios

The federal child tax credit that's been providing families $3,000 to $3,600 per child since March is set to expire on Jan. 1, but some Americans will continue receiving checks through state programs spreading across the country.

Why it matters: Seven states already have their own child tax credits, and nine have introduced legislation to add them since 2019. Like the expiring federal program, they're part of a nationwide effort to alleviate child poverty.

Peloton pumps its brakes

Data: FactSet; Chart: Axios Visuals

Peloton’s popularity is falling as swiftly as it shot up.

Why it matters: Not all pandemic habits stick around. Peloton's trajectory over the past two years exemplifies how challenging it's been for companies to gauge shifts in consumer demand — particularly in sectors heavily altered by the pandemic.

First look: Senators propose bill to ban corporate PACs

Sens. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) and Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) will soon propose a bill prohibiting for-profit corporations from establishing and managing political action committees, according to a copy of the legislation obtained by Axios.

Why it matters: The introduction of "The Ban Corporate PACs Act" comes amid heightened scrutiny on Capitol Hill regarding money in politics, including efforts to bar companies from influencing political campaigns and federal elections. It would likely face a court challenge and First Amendment concerns.
