Nearly 200,000 individuals with the group "People First," gathered and peacefully marched in Milan, Italy on Saturday to protest alleged "racist policies," reports the AP.
The big picture: Protestors say the populist League leader Matteo Salvini blocked humanitarian boats filled with migrants fleeing from Libya from entering the country while he served as interior minister. A bill passed in September 2018 making it easier to deny asylum status to migrants or refugees, "condemn[ing] hundreds of men, women [and] children who are desperate to reach safety to a watery grave," NGO Medecins Sans Frontieres and SOS Mediterranee said in a statement.
