A senior Treasury official who played a key role in the Trump administration's trade negotiations with China is leaving the department for Netflix, Axios has learned.
The big picture: The departure comes as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent helps steer Trump's sweeping overhaul of U.S. trade policy.
Zoom in: Eric Ettorre, the acting assistant secretary for international trade and development, is joining Netflix as chief of staff for strategy and operations in global affairs.
- Ettorre previously served as deputy assistant secretary for trade and investment policy and as a senior adviser.
- He advised Bessent on international economic policy — including efforts to address foreign trade barriers affecting American companies.
What they're saying: "His command of trade policy and sound strategic judgment made him an indispensable member of my team," Bessent said in a statement provided to Axios.
The intrigue: Ettorre, who is known to have a good working relationship with Bessent, is the latest senior official to leave amid unusually high turnover.
- Treasury had the most departures of Senate-confirmed officials of any Cabinet department during Trump's first 18 months in office, according to a July analysis by the nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service. (Ettorre was not Senate confirmed.)
Zoom out: Before joining Treasury, Ettorre served as trade counsel for the House Ways and Means Committee, where his portfolio included China policy, tariffs and supply-chain resilience.
- Ettorre also worked at the law firm Akin, advising on trade, financial services and economic policy.
