Three brothers, including two prominent real estate agents, were sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison each for their roles in a decade-long sex trafficking and sexual abuse scheme, the Department of Justice said.
The big picture: The sentencing follows the March convictions of Tal Alexander, 40, and twins Oren and Alon Alexander, 39, of Miami, on multiple federal sex offenses, including conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.
Driving the news: Oren and Tal Alexander used their prominence in the luxury real estate industry to facilitate the scheme, according to the DOJ.
- "Beyond leveraging their resources and clout," the brothers "also deployed deception and fraud to cause victims to travel with them or meet them in private locations for various trips and events," the DOJ said in a statement.
Zoom in: The brothers and others recruited women through social media, dating apps, in-person encounters and party promoters, using promises of luxury experiences, travel and accommodations.
- The women who attended were "drugged and forcibly raped or sexually assaulted," and at times, "multiple men," including one or more of the brothers, took part in these assaults, per the DOJ.
- "In some instances, the defendants physically restrained and held down their victims during the rapes and sexual assaults and ignored their victims' cries and explicit requests to stop," the DOJ said.
- "Some of the victims experienced symptoms of impaired physical and mental capacity, including limitations of movement and speech and incomplete memories of events. This prevented the victims from being able to fight back or escape during the rapes and sexual assaults."
Zoom out: U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni sentenced Alon Alexander to 30 years in prison for his role in the sex trafficking conspiracy, sex trafficking and enticement of one victim, sex trafficking of a minor victim, and the sexual abuse and aggravated sexual abuse of another victim.
- Oren Alexander was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his participation in the sex trafficking conspiracy, sex trafficking and enticement of one victim, the sexual abuse and aggravated sexual abuse of another victim, and the sexual exploitation of a minor victim.
- Tal Alexander was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his participation in the sex trafficking conspiracy, sex trafficking of one victim, sex trafficking and enticement of another victim, sex trafficking of a minor, and sex trafficking and enticement of another victim.
- Each brother received 10 years of supervised release. Alon and Oren Alexander were fined $300,000 each, while Tal Alexander was fined $350,000.
What they're saying: U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald said in a statement that the brothers had inflicted "unspeakable harm on so many young women."
- For years, they "used their careers and social status to conceal the danger they posed," he added. "Today's sentence makes clear that this craven, sinister conduct is extraordinarily serious and will be met with serious punishment."
