Trump nominates next Space Command leader

• Miller, the deputy chief of space operations, strategy, plans, programs and requirements, had his nomination submitted to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, according to a Congressional notice.

• Space Force Gen. Stephen Whiting, the current SPACECOM leader, will hit the position's standard three-year tenure at the start of 2027, according to his bio.

Between the lines: While the Congressional notice did not name Miller's position, Gen. Douglas Schiess, the U.S. Space Force's top officer, confirmed it was for the SPACECOM job on X.

• "He is an exceptional Guardian who has represented our service with distinction, and we believe he is a strong candidate for this critical joint leadership role," Schiess wrote.

The U.S. Space Force is the service branch that equips, trains and organizes its troops, or "Guardians." SPACECOM uses the service's Guardians, and other troops, to conduct space missions.

What they're saying: Charles Galbreath, a retired Space Force officer and Mitchell Institute senior fellow, told Axios that Schiess and Miller have a good working relationship.

• "He's a down-to-earth, straightforward leader, and I think he is absolutely the right choice to take U.S. Space Command," Galbreath said.
