White House pulls stalled ICE director nominee

The White House is pulling Lance Schroyer's stalled nomination to lead ICE.

The big picture: Schroyer's limited immigration experience created tension between Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and border czar Tom Homan, along with other MAGA figures, Axios' Brittany Gibson reported last month.

Driving the news: The White House did not explain why it withdrew the nomination of Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state highway trooper.

Schroyer was also formerly part of Mullin's security detail.

Catch up quick: Trump announced Schroyer's nomination in June, saying he "has what it takes to DETAIN AND DEPORT Illegal Alien Criminals."

He urged the Senate to "CONFIRM Lance, IMMEDIATELY" — but that didn't happen.
David Venturella, who previously worked for a private prison operator, is the current acting ICE director.

Friction point: Schroyer would've taken over a multi-billion dollar budget, inflated under the Trump administration, and a sprawling immigration crackdown that's triggered mass protests, lawsuits and due process concerns.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) threatened to delay Schroyer's confirmation hearing until he received more information about the killings of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal reported last month.
