Altman warns of "hiccups" with new flagship 5.6 Sol

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned Tuesday that the company's new GPT-5.6 Sol model may face "hiccups" soon.

Why it matters: The warning underscores that even one of the world's leading AI companies can struggle to scale the infrastructure needed to meet demand for cutting-edge AI.

Anthropic and SpaceX AI are also rolling out flagship models, intensifying competition for consumers and computing capacity.

Driving the news: Altman wrote on X that the model's "growth is insane" and that "the inference team has done heroic work to be able to support demand."

But that demand may face scaling issues, he wrote.
"We are going to move mountains to continue to scale, but it is possible there are some hiccups soon," Altman said.

Context: OpenAI officially launched its GPT-5.6 models to the public last week to great fanfare, with many celebrating its speed, creativity and ability to complete complex tasks.

OpenAI debuted the product in June, but delayed full public access at the request of the Trump administration.
Similar to Anthropic's Fable 5, GPT-5.6 was under review by the U.S. government, which assessed the model's advanced cybersecurity capabilities.
