House GOP fills Gonzales committee slots after his resignation

The House GOP Steering Committee has appointed Rep. David Joyce (R-Ohio) to replace former Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) on the powerful Homeland Security Committee, Axios has learned.

Steering also appointed freshman Rep. Jefferson Shreve (R-Ind.) to fill Gonzales' spot on the Appropriations Committee Monday evening.

Driving the news: The full conference will have to vote to ratify the Joyce and Shreve appointments during a conference meeting Tuesday morning.

Catch up quick: Gonzales submitted his formal resignation from Congress last week following a sexual misconduct scandal.

He was facing a push for his expulsion — along with bipartisan calls for him to step down — after admitting to an affair with a former staffer who died by suicide.
