Trump reveals Rep. Neal Dunn had a terminal diagnosis

The big picture: Johnson and Trump both discussed how the speaker is working with one of the narrowest majorities in history, and can only afford to lose two of his members on party-line votes.

• Trump said of Dunn's diagnosis: "No. 1, it was bad because I liked [Dunn]. No. 2, it's bad because I needed his vote," Trump said.
• Republicans are likely to win an April 7 special election runoff for former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-Ga.) seat, giving them one more vote.
• But a special election to replace New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) will take place April 16 — leaving the GOP with that extra margin for only about a week.

Driving the news: Trump and Johnson described how they worked to keep Dunn in office, including facilitating a surgery through Trump's doctors.

• Johnson said he had told Trump about Dunn's "grim" diagnosis, noting that he's "still coming to work, and if others got this diagnosis, they would be apt to go home and retire."
• Trump said Dunn told him that "June is the time," but added that "however long I live, I'm going to be voting for you."

The president said that after learning of Dunn's condition, he referred Dunn to a specialist at Walter Reed, where Dunn received emergency surgery.

• Trump said that after Dunn's surgery, his doctors told him, "Sir, I think he'll be fine."
• "It was a long operation. They gave him more stents and more everything that you can have," the president added.
