What Americans should do if they're stranded in Mexico

• Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). He was killed by Mexican security forces on Sunday.

What they're saying: "Americans should keep family and friends advised of your location and well-being," the U.S. State Department said in an advisory.

• U.S. citizens in Mexico were told by the State Department to minimize unnecessary movements, avoid areas around law enforcement activity, monitor local media, and follow local authorities' directions.
• U.S. citizens in Mexico can receive messages and alerts from the U.S. Embassy and Consulates via a WhatsApp channel. More resources and phone numbers are available on the embassy and consulate websites.

Zoom in: The State Department said there is no indication of any security-related flight disruptions in airports other than Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.

• Flights were still disrupted in Puerto Vallarta as of Monday because of flight crew availability. The embassy is in contact with airlines, per the State Department.

• All other airports in Mexico were open, and most airports were operating normally.

Zoom out: Areas in the Monday advisory include the states of Jalisco, Baja California and Nayarit.

• They also included areas of Colima, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Estado de Mexico, Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, and Zacatecas states.
• The situation returned to normal in Quintana Roo State, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas.
