Anthropic is releasing Claude Sonnet 4.6, its new default model, which the company says has better coding and computer use skills than prior versions.
Why it matters: Anthropic continues to shrink the gap between its premium and mainstream AI offerings, making advanced capabilities the default, even for free users.
Catch up quick: Anthropic offers three sets of models, Sonnet, Opus and Haiku.
- Sonnet models are designed to be the everyday workhorse, offering faster performance at lower cost.
- Opus models are more advanced, built for harder jobs like deep coding, complex reasoning, and long-term planning.
- Haiku models are the speediest and lowest cost.
Zoom in: Sonnet 4.6 is a step up. It offers:
- Stronger "computer use" skills. Anthropic says the model can use software the way a person would: clicking, typing and navigating interfaces.
- Smarter real work. Sonnet 4.6 reportedly outperforms the just-released Opus 4.6 on some real-world office tasks, meaning users won't need to pay for a premium model for certain jobs.
- Better coding at lower cost. Sonnet 4.6 improves on its predecessor by reasoning over long chunks of code, reading context before editing it, tightening logic instead of doubling it, and delivering smarter answers faster.
Between the lines: AI labs often follow a familiar playbook: Launch a premium model first, then trickle much of that capability down to free users over time.
Zoom out: This is the latest move in Anthropic's pitch to dominate enterprise adoption, something it also made clear in its latest funding announcement, which valued the company at $380 billion.
- Customers spending over $100,000 annually on Claude have increased 7x year over year.
- The number of customers spending $1 million+ annually grew from about 12 two years ago to more than 500 today.
The bottom line: Cheap AI models keep getting better, faster.
- By adding better performance into its cheaper default model, Anthropic may be going after a wider customer base in hopes of bringing in more paid users in the future.
