Aurora says automated long-distance trucks mark dawn of "superhuman" logistics

Aurora Innovation says its automated semi-trucks can now drive long distances non-stop, an advantage over human drivers, who are required by law to take rest breaks.

Why it matters: Round-the-clock operation is one of the promised benefits of automated trucks, as logistics companies look to boost efficiency and cope with a shortage of long-haul drivers.

Driving the news: Aurora's quarterly business update Wednesday included a $816 million net loss for 2025 as it continues to invest toward commercialization of its self-driving technology.

Citing strong demand, Aurora said it expects to have more than 200 automated trucks operating by the end of the year and that it expects to achieve positive free cash flow in 2028.
It's also on track to launch a new fleet of automated International trucks without a safety driver in the second quarter.

State of play: With its latest software, Aurora said it now has 10 driverless routes in Texas and Arizona, including a nearly 1,000-mile lane between Fort Worth and Phoenix.

Without mandatory rest breaks, Aurora's robot driver can cut transit times nearly in half and offer shippers efficiencies that are impossible for traditional single-driver fleets.
That will allow Aurora to begin expanding across the southern United States.

Hirschbach, which moves refrigerated goods from coast to coast, is an early customer, Aurora said.

Between the lines: To combat driver fatigue, the federal government requires human truck drivers to take a 30-minute break after eight hours of driving.

And they cannot drive for more than 11 hours during a single shift, without a 10-hour rest period.
For expedited cross-country loads, that sometimes means using two drivers per truck.
