Elon Musk may merge some of his companies

Zoom in: Both deals would make at least some strategic sense.

• SpaceX wants to launch data centers in orbit, and folding in xAI could aid in that effort. Plus, xAI's social media business (fka Twitter) could help smooth out some of SpaceX's revenue lumps ahead of the pending IPO (although its AI unit would also add tons of red ink).
• SpaceX also wants those orbital data centers to run on solar power, and Tesla has the energy storage chops to help make that happen. Plus, maybe it could send some Optimus Prime robots to terraform Mars before humans arrive.
• A merger of Tesla with xAI would seem like a better fit than either of the above — as evidenced by Tesla's recent $2 billion investment into xAI — although that's the one that Elon doesn't have absolute control to effect.

Door #3: Another option would be to merge all three companies, and maybe add The Boring Co. as a topper.

Flashback: Musk is no stranger to merging his companies, having put X and xAI together last year.

The bottom line: The timing of these leaks is bizarre, considering that SpaceX is ramping up IPO plans.

• That process would almost certainly be delayed were either merger to actually move forward — which suggests that this either is idle chatter or there are beginning to be some worries about the offering itself.
