OpenAI's newest initiative gives U.S. service members free ChatGPT Plus for a year to aid post-military transitions.
Why it matters: Roughly 200,000 American military service members transition into civilian life each year, a confusing adjustment potentially made easier with AI.
Between the lines: The offer applies to service members within a year of leaving the military or retiring, and to veterans in their first year of civilian life.
- OpenAI says ChatGPT can help veterans with writing resumes, practicing for interviews and career planning.
- The program also includes special onboarding tools and access to the OpenAI Academy to learn how to make the best use of ChatGPT.
Catch up quick: OpenAI has previously granted free or discount versions of its products to specific groups, including educators and students.
- Anthropic, Perplexity and others have offered similar free access.
What they're saying: "We think that there's a better way for our veterans to transition," former NSA head and retired Gen. Paul Nakasone told a group of reporters last week. Nakasone joined OpenAI's board in June 2024.
The intrigue: Veteran suicide rates are higher than in the general population; the hazard rate has been shown to be about 2.5 times higher for veterans within the first year of separation than for the active duty population.
- OpenAI, which is facing multiple lawsuits over user safety and suicides, says it has trained ChatGPT to recognize signs of emotional distress and guide users to veteran-specific support resources.
The bottom line: The pilot program highlights OpenAI's effort to frame AI as a practical ally for service members moving to civilian life.
