Supreme Court's SNAP reversal leaves states in a lurch

Catch up quick: The Supreme Court on Friday evening paused a federal judge's order that the Trump administration distribute some SNAP funds while a federal appeals court case proceeds.

Some states, including Michigan, had begun processing the payments before the Supreme Court stepped in. That means some recipients will receive some assistance while others will not.

• "Taking this matter all the way to the Supreme Court creates uncertainty, confusion, and frustration," Elizabeth Hertel, director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, said in a statement.
• Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has provided $4.5 million for the Food Bank Council of Michigan in the interim, the state said.
• At least 15 other states have declared emergencies as a result of lapsed SNAP payments.

What they're saying: "Let me be clear, President Trump is hellbent on preventing millions of Americans from putting food on the table," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. "He's made decision after decision to withhold funding that feeds families, seniors and children — and continues doubling down on this cruelty by challenging the courts' clear orders."

• Gov. Gavin Newsom said on X, "California won't back down in court from supporting the tens of millions of Americans the Trump Administration seemingly wants to starve."
• The White House referred requests to comment to the Office of Management and Budget, which didn't immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
