The Democratic National Committee is planning to expand the use of AI and tech tools for voter and volunteer engagement in the upcoming midterm and presidential elections after testing them in key state races this year.
Why it matters: Democrats are facing highly competitive elections in Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and redistricting fights with Republicans all over the country — and the DNC sees these tools as an edge in 2025 and beyond.
What they're saying: "Simply put, these tools and pilot programs are a game-changer," DNC Chair Ken Martin said in a press release shared first with Axios.
State parties like the Maryland Democrats are using Matchbook, a political tool to make predictions around which voters are likely to switch their party affiliation.
- Matchbook has a new voter and volunteer management database and AI modeling functions that allow users to optimize their campaign outreach by knowing who is likely to flip, per the DNC press release.
Organizers working to elect Democrats in Virginia's elections this November have been piloting the canvassing app OpenField on college campuses.
- The app gives organizers the ability to access data from conversations with voters during high-traffic canvassing, and organizers are using it to talk to students and help them check their voter registration.
- Organizers in Virginia are also using OutOrganize to manage volunteer teams at scale. The tool optimizes an organizer's daily workflows for reaching out to volunteers and voters.
In Missouri, the DNC said it's piloting Winnable, an events platform, to power the state Democratic party's efforts to block congressional maps drawn by Republicans from going into effect.
- The platform allows volunteers to sign up for multiple in-person and virtual events at once.
- It's helping state organizers meet their goal of collecting more than 100,000 signatures by the Dec. 11 deadline to overturn the map.
The bottom line: The DNC is ramping up its AI and tech playbook ahead of key elections.
- "We're excited to be piloting and investing in innovative and emerging technologies that will benefit the Democratic ecosystem and campaigns for years to come," Martin said.
