Republican lawmakers suggest Jack Smith should lose law license

• An attorney for Smith could not immediately be reached.

Context: Republicans have targeted a team called "Arctic Frost," which reportedly monitored communications from nearly a dozen Republican senators as part of Smith's investigation into Trump's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

• Earlier this month, the FBI shut down the group and fired several agents.

Driving the news: The Friday letter was signed by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.)

• "To the best we can tell, Smith's team went on this fishing expedition for one simple reason: we are Republicans who support President Trump," they wrote. "And, as noted above, we have no knowledge of any predicate that underlies this invasion of our privacy."

What we're watching: The lawmakers requested Attorney General Pam Bondi refer Smith to the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility.

• The Office of Professional Responsibility investigates allegations of misconduct at all levels of the DOJ and reports findings to bar disciplinary authorities.
• In the letter, the Republicans suggested that Smith's conduct may bar him from practicing law in Tennessee and New York.
