Stellantis announces plan to increase U.S. vehicle production by 50%

The automaker formerly known as Fiat Chrysler on Tuesday announced plans to invest $13 billion over four years in the U.S. and add more than 5,000 jobs here.

Why it matters: Stellantis is moving to mitigate the impact of President Trump's tariffs on its business by locating more production locally.

Driving the news: Stellantis said the investment amounts to "the largest in the Company's 100-year U.S. history," increasing its U.S. vehicle production by 50%. The plan includes:

A new plug-in hybrid SUV and conventional engine version to be produced at its truck plant in Warren, Mich., beginning in 2028.
An overhaul of a factory in Detroit to make the next-generation Dodge Durango beginning in 2029.
Reopening its assembly plant in Belvidere, Ill., which it had agreed to do as part of its UAW contract in 2023. The plant will make the Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Compass. The company reportedly recently canceled plans for a battery plant at Belvidere that was also part of the UAW deal.
Locating production of a new midsize truck at its plant in Toledo, Ohio. The vehicle, previously set for Belevedere, is set to arrive in 2028.

State of play: More than 40% of the automaker's U.S. sales were imports in 2024, according to Automotive News.

Reality check: The announcement bundles together some new investments and some that were already in the works, such as Belvidere.
