Video game maker Electronic Arts is poised to go private in a massive deal that could fundamentally change one of the world's leading video game companies.
Why it matters: EA Games produces some of the most popular video games worldwide, and has a slate of highly anticipated releases due out in the next several years.
- Popular EA titles include the "Battlefield," "EA FC" and "Madden NFL" franchises, as well as "The Sims."
Driving the news: Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake Partners, and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners plan to take EA private.
- The deal is valued at $55 billion, or $210 per share in cash and comes as Saudi Arabia has pushed hard into gaming, including the $4.9 billion Scopely takeover.
What they're saying: Gamers nationwide flooded social media with questions about what this acquisition would mean for EA's popular gaming titles.
- "With Battlefield 6 about to launch and a pipeline that could add more than $2B in incremental bookings by FY28, the true earnings power of EA is only beginning to emerge," Mike Hickey of The Benchmark Company wrote, per AP.
EA didn't share any scheduling changes to its roadmap ahead. It did not respond to Axios' request for comment on Monday.
- "The transaction positions EA to accelerate innovation and growth to build the future of entertainment," EA said in a press release.
What's next: The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of fiscal 2027. EA shareholders still need to approve the deal.
Here's what games EA plans to release before and after the deal.
EA's upcoming game releases
Zoom in: EA has pointed to three games for its upcoming schedule.
- "Battlefield 6," the latest installment of the decades-old first-person shooter franchise, is scheduled for release on Oct. 10. The game is expected to have 100 million players at launch.
- "Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted" is a sequel to the tower defense game and is scheduled for release on Oct. 23.
- "Star Wars Zero Company," a single-player game that takes place during the Clone Wars, is expected to be released in 2026, though no firm date has been shared.
EA upcoming games after buyout
Zoom out: Not much is known as far as which EA games are confirmed for after the buyout.
- EA will likely still release its yearly updates for its sports franchises, EA FC, F1, Madden NFL and College Football.
- EA's latest-released titles include "FC 26," "NHL 26" and "Skate."
EA's rumored and in-development games
These are EA's projects that have been announced:
- "RustHeart," a co-op RPG where a player and their robot sidekick go on an adventure, is currently listed as in development for PC and console.
- "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" sequel is expected sometime in the future. EA told GamesRadar in 2024 that a third game in the "Star Wars Jedi" trilogy was in the cards, and would reportedly wrap up the story of Jedi Cal Kestis.
- An Iron Man game is expected sometime in the future, per EA Studios. The game, developed by Motive Studio and Marvel Games, will feature an original story about Tony Stark.
- A Mass Effect sequel has been rumored, with EA saying in January that it was shuffling its staff around so that studio BioWare could focus completely on the game. No release date has been shared.
- EA is also rumored to be developing a college basketball game.
The bottom line: What happens next for EA remains unclear, but there are plenty of games in the works for the company.
