President Trump repeated his belief that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize at the United Nations General Assembly this week, claiming "everyone" says he should win the coveted honor.
Reality check: While some high-profile allies agree, three-quarters of Americans say the opposite, a Washington Post-Ipsos poll conducted earlier this month found.
By the numbers: Just 22% of those surveyed said Trump deserves a Nobel.
- Even Republicans were split on the question. Fewer than half of those polled (49%) said Trump should receive the award.
What they're saying: "The only poll that matters to President Trump is the thousands of lives he has saved by ending decades-long conflicts around the world," White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement provided to Axios.
- "No world leader has done more to advance global stability, and while he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize many times over, he cares more about saving people from being killed."
Driving the news: Speaking before the UN General Assembly in a meandering speech Tuesday, the president took credit for ending "seven unendable wars," a misleading claim that has been debunked.
- He later added: "What I care about is not winning prizes, it's saving lives."
- In June, Trump mentioned the Nobel six times when he announced an agreement aimed an ending a decades-long war between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- "No, I won't get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do," the president wrote on Truth Social at the time.
Zoom out: A majority of Americans polled also said President Obama did not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize when he received it in 2009.
Flashback: Obama's win drew skepticism in some corners and planted a growing thorn in Trump's side.
- "If I were named Obama, I would have had the Nobel Prize given to me in 10 seconds," Trump said last year.
What we're watching: French President Emmanuel Macron suggested Tuesday there's only one path to Trump securing that white whale: ending the war in Gaza.
- Speaking to France's BFMTV, he said, "There is one person who can do something about it, and that is the U.S. president," per Reuters.
Methodology: The poll of 2,513 U.S. adults was conducted online between Sept. 11-15 and has a margin of error of ± 2 percentage points.
