Bureau of Labor Statistics: Key report, delayed last week, now out Oct. 30

• The annual Consumer Expenditures report — which is used to determine how goods and services should be weighted in the Consumer Price Index — was originally scheduled to be released on Tuesday.
• The BLS said the delay of that report won't impact the release of the actual weightings, scheduled to be published early next year.

What they're saying: The BLS said the delay stems from last year's redesign of the questionnaire that sought to "reduce respondent burden and improve data quality."

• But as officials readied this year's report, they discovered discrepancies that stemmed from the shift in the survey.
• "In preparing the release, BLS discovered a discrepancy in the tabulation of some of the items impacted by the questionnaire change and is taking additional time to validate the data to ensure a high-quality product," according to its website.

Zoom in: The Consumer Expenditures Survey is an annual report on spending, income and demographic characteristics of U.S. consumers in any given year.

• The initial open-ended delay by the BLS raised uncertainty about the possible impact on future data releases — and whether staffing issues were to blame.
