Exclusive: NASCAR faces "tricky" challenge selling overseas, commissioner says

• But asked how to expand that Americana brand overseas, Phelps conceded: "Well, I would say it's a bit tricky right now."

Yes, but: Phelps noted there's still an appetite for NASCAR's style of racing, which differs in a number of ways from the global powerhouse F1, including with more of what he calls "beating and banging."

• "Ours is about really, again, a sensory experience and one that I think globally is is gonna work out really well for us."

What to watch: What shape that global expansion takes, beyond what NASCAR already offers at a lower level in places like Brazil and Canada.

• "We believe that there are other opportunities to create a global racing series," Phelps said.
• "What that looks like at this particular point. I'm unsure, but I know as a sport and as a brand and things Americana, it can work outside of our borders."
