Drew Brees joins Big Ten in life-saving competition

Zoom in: Cancer patients use approximately 25% of all U.S. blood donations, a stat Brees knows well.

• The retired quarterback and his wife, Brittany, both Purdue alumni, established a nonprofit in 2003 to improve cancer patient care.

By the numbers: Only 3% of Americans donate blood, although 65% are eligible.

How it works: The school that drives the most blood donations during the 2025 football season will receive a $1 million donation from Abbott to advance student or community health.

• Students, alumni and fans can donate blood on behalf of any of the 18 member schools at blood centers across the country.
• The winning university will be announced at the Big Ten football championship Game on Dec. 6.

Caveat: Not everyone is a good candidate for blood donation. Consult with your doctor if you're unsure about your eligibility.
