House Oversight receives "thousands of pages" of Epstein files

The House Oversight Committee has received the first batch of documents it subpoenaed from the Justice Department pertaining to its probe of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Why it matters: The initial tranche, which a committee spokesman said contains "thousands of pages of documents," could unveil new — and potentially politically damaging details of Epstein's dealings.

The committee plans to make the documents public after "thorough review to ensure any victims' identification and child sex abuse material are redacted," the committee spokesman said.
Both Democrats and Republicans will have an opportunity to review the documents.

Catch up quick: The Oversight Committee also subpoenaed several former government officials as part of its investigation into Epstein, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, and former FBI director James Comey.

Former Attorney General William Barr sat for a closed-door deposition Monday, with others to follow.

The big picture: The documents land as Trump and GOP leadership have faced an uproar from their base over Epstein that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will have to reckon with when lawmakers return in September.

Separately, DOJ on Friday released audio recordings and transcripts of Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche's interview with imprisoned Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.
