Trump doubles tariffs on India to 50% over Russian oil purchases

President Trump on Wednesday doubled tariffs on India to 50%, citing its purchases of Russian oil.

Why it matters: A long-standing and close U.S. ally now faces some of the highest tariffs imposed by the administration.

The intrigue: Trump's executive order delays the new, additional 25% tariffs for 21 days, potentially giving India (and Russia) wide latitude to negotiate before the levies take effect.

Catch up quick: For months, various members of the administration indicated a trade deal with India was imminent.

But as the Aug. 1 deadline grew closer, Trump and other officials escalated their rhetoric about India's oil purchases.
He imposed a 25% tariff last week, higher than many other allies, and soon threatened to increase that further.

The other side: The Indian government has said higher tariffs linked to oil purchases were inappropriate, noting both the U.S. and the EU still make purchases from Russia as well.
