Reddit CMO Roxy Young is departing the social media company after more than eight years, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: Young helped transform Reddit from an internet forum into a global consumer brand.
- During her time at the company, Reddit's corporate milestones included airing a viral Super Bowl ad, running a voter initiative called Up The Vote and going public.
Catch up quick: Young joined Reddit in 2017 as vice president of marketing after serving in that role at Hipmunk, the travel company co-founded by Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman. He brought her on after rejoining Reddit himself.
- She was promoted to CMO in 2020 and also held the title of consumer experience officer. Her company biography noted that she was the first Latinx woman to join Reddit's C-suite, tasked with "building the brand's recognition, relevance and reputation."
- Young previously worked in marketing at Rewarder, Zynga, Sephora, Netflix and Gap.
What they're saying: "Roxy has been an incredible partner and leader at Reddit. She played a huge role in taking what was once a misunderstood website into a global, mainstream brand," Huffman said in a statement to Axios.
The big picture: Young's departure comes amid other leadership changes at Reddit following its IPO.
- Last month, Reddit hired Adam Collins, formerly of Molson Coors, as its first chief communications officer.
- Laura Nestler, Reddit's vice president of community, now reports directly to Huffman to elevate her team's work, according to a Reddit spokesperson.
- Jim Squires, Reddit's executive vice president of business marketing and growth, is leading a newly combined marketing organization spanning both consumer and business.
- Tavish MacLellan, an 11-year Reddit veteran, leads creative.
What's next: Reddit reports its second-quarter earnings on July 31.
