Suspected shooter identified in Idaho firefighter ambush

Driving the news: The alleged shooter, Wess Roley, was found dead at the scene of the incident.

• "It appears he shot himself," Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said during a press briefing Monday afternoon. A shotgun was found at the scene, he added.
• He was found to be in possession of a flint starter, which officials believe was his method for starting the fire.
• Roley had an interaction with the firefighters when they arrived at the scene, the sheriff said.
• Deputies did not yet find any sort of manifesto nor had they identified a motive. An inventory of a vehicle believed to be Roley's had yet to be completed, Norris said.

Zoom in: Roley had previously lived in in California, Arizona, and Idaho, the sheriff said.

• The sheriff's office and local police department had five previous interactions with him, though Norris described them as "minor."
• Authorities were unable to locate a criminal history for Roley, according to Norris.

• He asked the sheriff's office to do a wellness check on Wess Roley's father and his wife.
• The grandfather told the New York Times on Monday that his grandson had expressed interest in becoming a forest firefighter.
• The 20-year-old moved to Idaho last year, where he was living in his own apartment and working for a tree company, Dale Roley told the Times.
• "He was just trying to figure his life out," he said. "He seemed to be a little bit optimistic."
