Detained Mahmoud Khalil meets newborn son

• Khalil was allowed a contact visit, without a plexiglass divider, with his wife and son Thursday.

• "Such a visit is necessary for the most elementary human reasons," his lawyers wrote, adding that such a visit "is critical to ensure Mr. Khalil, who is an active participant his legal case, can continue to meaningfully contribute to the proceedings before this Court."
• Immigration officials and the detention facility administrators had so far refused to allow a contact visit between Khalil and his family, his legal team said.

What they're saying: Ahead of the hearing, Khalil's wife, Noor Abdalla, traveled from New York to the ICE facility in Louisiana with their newborn in hopes the court would allow the meeting.

• "After flying over a thousand miles to Louisiana with our newborn son, his very first flight, all so his father could finally hold him in his arms, ICE has denied us even this most basic human right," Abdalla said in a statement Wednesday before the court's decision.

• "This is not just heartless," she added. "It is deliberate violence, the calculated cruelty of a government that tears families apart without remorse."
• ICE did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
