Inside the room: When Kennedy's comments rippled across social media, White House staffers reacted privately with a shrug, a chuckle and an expectation of more criticism than materialized, according to an insider privy to the conversations.

Context: Kennedy traveled to West Virginia to promote reforms from the governor that align with his claims about unhealthy products in America's food supply — especially ultraprocessed foods and additives.

• West Virginia is advancing a bill to try and stop people using SNAP, commonly referred to as food stamps, from buying soda. The ultimate authority lies with the Department of Agriculture, which runs the program. But Kennedy has been supportive of these nutrition reforms.

• The governor also pledged to get food dyes and additives removed from school meals.

At the event, Morrisey said he would also like to promote a healthier lifestyle — and plans to lead by example.

• He invited Kennedy to be his personal trainer.
