Nearly 100 people were arrested after protesters gathered at Trump Tower in Manhattan Thursday to demand the release of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and Columbia University alumnus who was detained by immigration authorities on Saturday.
The big picture: The protest, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, featured signs such as "Free Mahmoud Khalil," "Fight Nazis not students" and "You can't deport a movement."
- It comes days after Khalil was detained by federal agents at his home in New York after the Trump administration revoked his green card.
Zoom in: Actor Debra Winger was among the protesters and told the Associated Press, "I'm standing up for my rights, and I'm standing up for Mahmoud Khalil, who has been illegally abducted and taken to an undisclosed location."
- "Does that sound like America to you?" added Winger, who was not arrested.
- Winger accused the Trump administration of having "no interest in Jewish safety" and "co-opting antisemitism."
