NOAA to use "Gulf of America" in weather forecasts

Zoom in: The name change, first reported by Bloomberg, will affect everything from routine marine forecasts for mariners to tropical storm and hurricane forecasts.

• It could be reversed under a future president, since executive orders don't have the same staying power as laws passed by Congress.

What they're saying: National Weather Service spokesperson Susan Buchanan told Axios the change will affect all of the agency's weather products.

• "NOAA is in the process of implementing the Executive Order, 'Restoring Names that Honor American Greatness,'" she said in a statement.
• "Work is underway to update naming conventions as quickly as possible on nautical charts, online maps, weather products, websites and other materials across NOAA."

Zoom out: The Hurricane Center hasn't determined yet how it will handle its forecasts outside the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone while being consistent with Trump's executive order.

• The zone extends no more than 200 nautical miles from the territorial sea baseline and is adjacent to the 12-nautical-mile territorial sea of the U.S., including Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Northern Mariana Islands.
• NOAA is a Commerce Department agency responsible for predicting the weather, issuing life-saving watches and warnings for everything from tornadoes to hurricanes, maintaining accurate nautical charts, conducting climate and oceans research and other responsibilities.
