Schumer's Dem resistance to include "spotlight" sessions

Senate Democrats will hold so-called "spotlight" hearings as an oversight mechanism to the Trump administration, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Monday.

Why it matters: The unofficial "spotlight" hearings are another arm of Democrats' new resistance movement, which Schumer said also will include litigation against the White House.

Schumer said in a letter to colleagues Monday that Senate Democrats will hold the oversight hearings to "expose the rampant wrongdoing of the Trump Administration."
Over the weekend, Schumer announced a new whistleblower portal for federal employees to "report corruption, abuses of power, and threats to public safety."

The big picture: The Schumer letter Monday mirrors a plan of attack outlined by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) earlier this month.

Democrats in both chambers have latched onto Trump's attempted federal funding freeze and shuttering of USAID as examples of abuses of executive power.
