Weather firm raises $22 million for its modeling advances

• In an interview with Axios on Monday, Meteomatics CEO Martin Fengler said the company's ultra-high resolution weather model, to be released in the U.S. during the next few months, can pick up on details that other models miss.
• The model had been running in Europe, but this marks an expansion of it into the U.S., which opens new opportunities for the firm.
• Meteomatics is also known for its fleet of "meteodrones" that gather weather data on a more frequent basis than twice-daily weather balloon launches from the National Weather Service.

The intrigue: The company, which boasts about 600 clients including Tesla and Airbus, plans to use the new funding to advance its computer model offerings, boost development and deployment of its drone systems, and market its "1k model" across the U.S.

• By running it hourly at 1 kilometer ( 0.6-mile) resolution, Meteomatics says their model can capture fine-scale features of storm systems and detect threats other systems miss.
• "Weather-related business risks are no longer something companies need to simply consider; a company's ability to accurately predict and prepare for weather threats can make or break their business," Fengler said in a statement.
