Google Maps to show Gulf of America and Mount McKinley to U.S. users

• Google said in a statement Monday that the company has "a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources."

State of play: Trump on his first day in office ordered the renaming of Alaska's Denali to Mount McKinley — its previous name, after President William McKinley and the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

• Former President Obama had ordered the renaming of McKinley to Denali in 2015 to recognize the Indigenous history in the area surrounding North America's tallest peak.

Reality check: As for the gulf, the U.S. does not control exclusively the body of water, so it is not only up to America to decide what it is called.

• Google said users will see their official local name so users in Mexico will still see the "Gulf of Mexico."
• Users in other countries will see both names.

What's next: The name changes will be reflected when the Geographic Names Information System, the national standard for geographic names, is updated.
