Walmart boosts some top managers to over $600,000 a year

The big picture: Starting Feb. 1, Walmart is increasing the starting base pay for the market manager position from $130,000 to $160,000, Walmart spokesperson Anne Hatfield told Axios.

• Walmart also is increasing the annual stock grant from $75,000 to $100,000 for market managers.
• The market manager's bonus potential increases from up to 90% of their base salary to up to 100%, Hatfield said.

Zoom in: Walmart has more than 400 market managers nationwide, who each oversee about a dozen stores.

• Market managers who get their full bonuses can earn between $420,000 and $620,000.

What they're saying: "This role — which oversees multiple stores — is key for our business and for serving our customers however they shop," Walmart said in a statement to Axios.

• "This is the latest in a series of investments in hourly and salaried roles across Walmart U.S."

Flashback: Last year, Walmart raised pay for store managers and launched a new bonus program for store managers and one for store hourly associates.

• Store managers can get a bonus up to 200% of their base salary with the program.
• Walmart also started giving store managers stock grants last year for the first time.

What's next: Store managers and market managers that are getting bonuses will get their payout with the higher percentages in mid-March, Hatfield said.
