Thousands of flights delayed amid winter storm

Thousands of flights were delayed or canceled Monday as a major winter storm swept much of the U.S.

The big picture: As a sprawling and intense storm traverses the country, it has brought snow and frigid temperatures, knocked out power, grounded travel and brought the nation's capital to a halt.

By the numbers: More than 6,300 flights within, into, or out of the U.S. were delayed as of 4:30pm ET Monday, and nearly 2,000 were canceled, according to data from FlightAware.

More than 260 flights from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, were canceled. That's about 65% of all flights out of DCA scheduled for Monday.
More than half of the flights coming into DCA were also canceled.
Nearby Washington Dulles International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport both grounded more than a hundred flights each.
St. Louis Lambert and Chicago O'Hare also had over 100 flights canceled at each airport.

Zoom in: Southwest Airlines had the most cancellations, with more than 430 flights grounded.

American Airlines had the most delays with more than 800, followed closely by Southwest.

Zoom out: Over 248,000 customers were without power across six states as of 4:30pm ET, per poweroutage.us.
