Hochul is latest governor to ask Biden to step in on mystery drones

• "This has gone too far," Hochul said in a statement, referencing temporary forced closures of runways at New York Stewart International Airport on Friday night "due to drone activity in the airspace."
• Reports of suspicious drone sightings began in November in central New Jersey, then spread to New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Maryland.
• New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) wrote to President Biden Friday to express "growing concern about reports of unmanned aircraft systems" and request more federal resources.

Zoom out: New Jersey and New York senators on Thursday also requested a briefing from federal agencies by Dec. 23.

• Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who sits on the Senate's Homeland Security committee, said the drones should be shot down "if necessary."

Zoom in: In her statement, Hochul called on Congress to pass the the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act.

• The legislation would "reform legal authorities" to respond to address threats from unmanned aircraft systems, plus give the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) more oversight power.

What they're saying: "Using very sophisticated electronic detection technologies provided by federal authorities, we have not been able to ... corroborate any of the reported visual sightings," national security spokesman John Kirby said in the briefing room earlier this week.

• "To the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft that are being operated lawfully."
