A manifesto found on Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, reportedly said "these parasites had it coming."
Why it matters: The document could offer a potential clue into the motivation behind last week's shocking killing of the executive just outside an investor conference in midtown Manhattan.
Driving the news: Mangione was arrested on gun charges Monday after he was spotted by an employee at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Police found a "ghost gun" and a fake ID on him. He was later charged with murder.
- Police have not released the multipage handwritten document from Mangione but said it showed "ill will towards corporate America."
- He apologized for any strife or trauma but said that "these parasites had it coming" CNN reported, citing NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, who told the news outlet it indicated Mangione acted alone.
- The manifesto "mirrored quotes Mangione posted on his Goodreads account" from Ted Kaczynski, the infamous "Unabomber,'' the New York Post reports, saying he "apparently hated the medical community because of how it treated a sick relative."
Between the lines: Thompson's murder triggered a groundswell of online vitriol toward the insurance industry and the lack of sympathy among the flood of commenters continued following Mangione's arrest.
- Sympathizers took to the internet to slam the McDonald's employee for tipping off police.
