National Dog Show: Vito the pug wins "Best in Show"

• Seven winners over the past two decades have been terriers.

Vito, from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, won the title at the Philadelphia show, beating nearly 2,000 dogs.

What they're saying: "To look at a pug is to put a smile on your face," judge George Milutinovich said, sharing that Vito's "compact, features and movement" is "everything a pug should be."

State of play: Second place or "Reserve Best in Show" was Verde, a Welsh terrier whose handler is from Rialto, California.

Here are the show group winners:

• Sporting: Houston, a Clumber spaniel from Keyport, New Jersey.
• Working: Monty, a giant schnauzer from Chaplin, Connecticut.
• Hound: The Zit, an Ibizan hound from Spring Hill, Florida.
• Herding: Rupert, a Berger Picard from Shingle Springs, California.
• Non-Sporting: JJ, a Lhasa Apso from Sabot, Virginia.
