Biden joins new global anti-poverty alliance during G20

• About one in 10 people globally, or more than 780 million, suffer from hunger, UN data shows.

State of play: The global alliance was a result of a proposal by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

• Per Reuters, part of a pledged $4 billion investment announced Monday by President Biden through the World Bank would be dedicated to the alliance.
• The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty has been backed by 82 countries so far, as well as more than 50 international organizations and philanthropic groups like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Zoom in: A key part of the alliance will be a shared database of donors and best practices for fighting poverty that organizations can use to connect with relevant state actors, per the plan put forth by Brazil.

• "By favoring the pooling of resources and expertise, the alliance enables greater impact and efficiency than individual and fragmented efforts," says one of the foundational documents.

• It seeks to complement the UN's goals for development, which calls for actions to curb hunger worldwide by 2030.

What they're saying: "We'll be better able to articulate international recommendations, effective public policies and successful financing sources," Lula said in a statement Monday.
