Rep. August Pfluger tapped as next RSC chairman

Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas) was elected to serve as the next chairman of the Republican Study Committee on Friday, edging out Rep. Ben Cline (R-Va.) in an 80-57 vote.

Why it matters: The position has served as a springboard to bigger roles for numerous House Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), former Vice President Mike Pence (R-Ind.) and Sen.-elect Jim Banks (R-Ind.).

Pfluger is set to replace current chairman Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), who was selected this week to serve as the next House Republican policy chairman.
"As Chairman, I am committed to championing policies that protect our freedoms, ensure national security, and foster economic prosperity for all Americans," Pfluger said in a statement, adding that the RSC "will continue to be the conservative backbone of the House, pushing for a strong, resilient America that can stand up to both foreign adversaries and domestic challenges."
The RSC chair leads the largest conservative caucus in Congress.

The big picture: The RSC is expected to play a key role in shaping policy next year, when Republicans will control both the chambers of Congress and the White House.
